Paul Smith, considered to be one high benchmark for British fashion, released his nautical inspired fall/winter 2012 collection earlier this year to the joy of many and to the confusion of some. Aside from the ocean backdrop behind the runway and the foghorn soundtrack playing in the back, many felt the sailor theme was absent for the majority of the show.
In my opinion, the theme was subtle but did appear in some pieces, such as double-breasted pea coats and other types of long overcoats. For the most part, the collection featured a barrage of cropped fabric-blocked jackets. Two of my favorites include a jacket that looked like a hybrid between a varsity and a moto jacket and one with a blouson style, both made of leather and wool. The collection also displayed dark-colored overcoats paired with fitted black trousers and matching colored boots.

Personally, the presence or absence of a nautical theme isn’t so much of an issue as it is for others. This ready-to-wear clothing line features pieces I would proudly wear on any occasion. Santa, if you’re out there listening, I would be happy to unwrap any one of these gems under my tree this Christmas morning. Here’s to wishful thinking!
