How to Wear a Tuxedo – The Essential Guide for Men

In my humble opinion, sporting a tuxedo is a privilege. It is something not all men have done or have done often. A full-on tuxedo is the staple ensemble when attending the most formal of events and is quite often the go-to choice for many of today’s A-list stars when attending award shows and other high-profile events. For me, it all came together when I first saw Sean Connery as James Bond in ‘Diamonds Are Forever’. It was then that I realized that the tuxedo was a symbol of style, elegance, and power.

In today’s modern fashion, the tux has broken through some stiff barriers and can now be used in a myriad of ways. For example, the tuxedo jacket can often be worn on its own with varying options depending on the occasion. Let’s review some of these, shall we?

1. Black-Tie Event

For these types of events, a standard tux is likely mandatory. The best choice is to go with an all-black tuxedo made of wool featuring satin lapels on the front of the jacket that match the trimmings on the side of the trousers. Stick with a plain white dress shirt and accompany this with a decorative peak white lapel in the front jacket pocket. As for footwear, you can’t go wrong with a patent leather piece.

2. Formal Event

Here is where we can break out from the norm and use some creativity. Try this look on for size: Start with a midnight-blue tuxedo jacket, and pair it with a plain white dress shirt, a dark-hued printed tie, a pair of fitted gray dress trousers, and velvet loafers; finish with a black pocket square for that added touch of sophistication.

3. Smart Casual Event

Over the past few years, utilizing a tuxedo jacket to “smart” up a casual outfit has become more of an option and is something that has popped up in the fashion scene. Here’s a look worth trying: Start with a gray tux jacket, and use it to cover a muted-hued button-down. To complete this look, reach for a pair of dark-wash denim jeans and a dark-brown leather loafer.
